Dubai Used Car Buying Checklist (25 Critical Points)
Take this interactive or printable inspection checklist with you when viewing pre-owned vehicles across Dubai showrooms or private sales.
Paperwork & Legal Verification
Check that the seller's Emirates ID matches the name on the Mulkiya and that the chassis number (VIN) on the card matches the physical stamp on the car dashboard/door jamb.
Enter the 17-character chassis number on the Emirates Vehicle Gate (evg.ae) or Ministry of Interior (moi.gov.ae) portal to check recorded accident history across the UAE.
If the vehicle was bought on loan, ensure the bank has electronically transferred the mortgage release to RTA before giving any money to the seller.
Look for the Gulf Standards Organization (GSO) conformity plate on the driver door jamb. American, Canadian, or Japanese imports often suffer from salvage flood titles or lack desert-rated radiators and AC compressors.
Review original dealer service stamps. Cars with full agency history (Al-Futtaim, Gargash, AGMC, Al Nabooda) retain higher resale value and lower failure risk.
Bodywork & Structural Integrity
Inspect front chassis legs and rear boot floor for welding marks, crinkled metal, or fresh seam sealant which indicate severe frame collision repairs.
Check uniform gaps between hood, fenders, doors, and tailgate. Uneven gaps are a primary tell of replaced or realigned body panels.
Check rubber window seals and headlights for paint overspray or texture differences ('orange peel') signaling resprayed body sections.
Verify manufacturer logo stamps on all side windows and windshield. Replaced glass often points to previous rollover, break-in, or severe impact.
Check exhaust, suspension arms, and floor pan for rust. Coastal Dubai humidity or cars imported from overseas salt-belt regions can hide severe structural rot.
Engine Bay & Mechanicals
Ensure the engine is completely cold before starting. Listen for metallic valve ticking, timing chain rattle, or uneven idle hunting.
Unscrew the engine oil cap and inspect for milky emulsion ('mayonnaise'), which indicates a blown head gasket. Verify coolant is clear and colored (not brown rust water).
Inspect valve cover, oil pan, power steering rack, and transmission bellhousing for active oil or fluid drips.
Blue smoke indicates burning oil (worn piston rings/valve seals); thick white smoke indicates coolant burning; black smoke indicates unburnt rich fuel.
Inspect serpentine accessory belts for cracking, fraying, or chirping tensioner bearings under load.
Drivetrain, Brakes & Suspension
Test shift through P, R, N, D while stationary. Shifts should engage smoothly without jerking, clunking, or hesitation. Test kick-down acceleration on the road.
Check brake discs for deep grooves or lips. Test for steering wheel pulsation under firm braking, indicating warped brake rotors.
Bounce each vehicle corner. The car should rebound once and stabilize immediately. Listen for knocks over speed humps.
On a flat road, verify the car tracks dead straight without pulling hard to either side when briefly relaxing grip on the steering wheel.
In the UAE, tires older than 5 years will automatically fail the RTA vehicle inspection test. Check the 4-digit date code on all 4 tires (e.g. 2424 = 24th week of 2024).
Electronics, AC & Road Testing
Run the AC on maximum cold while parked. The air must blow freezing cold within 90 seconds. A warm AC in Dubai often means an expensive evaporator or compressor replacement.
Turn ignition on without starting: confirm Check Engine, ABS, Airbag, and Battery lights illuminate, then extinguish cleanly once the engine fires. If a light never turns on, the bulb may have been removed to conceal a fault.
Plug an OBD-II scanner into the diagnostic port under the dashboard to scan for stored or pending DTC error codes and check if emissions monitors were recently cleared.
Test every window regulator, electric mirror, sunroof tilt/slide, door lock actuator, and electronic boot release.
Always insist on taking the car to Tasjeel, Shamil, or AG Cars for an official RTA Comprehensive Test (approx. AED 450) before exchanging payment.
